Introductory Flights
The introductory flight, also referred to as discovery flight, is the first step in an aviation adventure. The intro flight offers future aviators the opportunity to experience first hand, what it is like at the controls of an aircraft.
What Can I Expect?
When you arrive at the airport, you will be greeted by one of our friendly staff members and introduced to your flight Instructor. Your flight instructor will ask you some basic questions such as: What are your goals in aviation? Have you ever been in an aircraft before? etc. You will then enjoy one of our briefing areas with your Instructor and talk about what to expect during the flight, a discussion of the basics of handling the aircraft in the air, and any other information you would like to know for the flight.
After the ground briefing, you will be signed out and proceed to the aircraft with your Instructor. Every flight must start with a pre-flight inspection, also known as a walkaround, of the aircraft. This ensures that the aircraft is safe for flight. During the walkaround, your Instructor will explain various parts of the airplane to you and feel free to ask as many questions as you want.
After the walkaround, you and your instructor will get into / access the aircraft for the flight portion. Your Instructor will perform the takeoff and landing for this flight but once the aircraft reaches altitude, you will have a chance to take the controls and fly the airplane on your own. Again, you are encouraged to ask as many questions as you would like. There is no such thing as a silly question.
What’s Next?
After you return to the airport, if you decide you would like to pursue your pilot licence, that’s great! It’s as simple as booking a meeting with our Chief Flight Instructor (CFI) to discuss and plan your career. You will be assigned an Instructor and be requested to provide copies of the following documents prior to your first flight:
- Valid medical from Transport Canada
- Valid passport or birth certificate (if Canadian)
- Valid English language results (IELTS) or having completed high school in Canada
- NOTE: A minimum IELTS score of 6.0 in each band and an overall IELTS score of 6.5 and above
After your meeting you may wish to book your next flight. Maple Wings staff will provide you with some study material and your very own Pilot Logbook to keep track of all of your flights. Your Instructor will show you what will be covered during your next lesson. If you need to take some time to think about it, that’s fine too. Our staff are always available to help answer your questions.
There is no homework or preparations you need to make prior to this flight.
This flight can count towards your pilot licence. The ground brief and flight costs are approximately one (1) hour and will cost CAD $140 (in a Cessna 152) and CAD $150 (in a Cessna 172) + applicable taxes.
