Night Rating (NR)

Enjoy picturesque sunsets and calm Visual Flight Rules (VFR) nights with your very own night rating! Whether you are pursing the night rating for fun or to take your commercial training to the next level, the night rating is a wonderful asset to any pilots resume.

Pre-Requisites

  • must hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or higher
  • must be a Canadian citizen or a person admitted into Canada to undertake flight training
  • must be able to read, write and speak in English without assistance

Training Requirements

A minimum of 20 hours of flight training is required

  • 10 of which must be night flying
    • 5 dual including a minimum of 2 hours of cross country time
    • 5 solo hours (this must include a minimum of 10 take-offs and landings)
  • the remaining 10 hours must be dual instrument training
    • of which 5 hours can be completed in the simulator
    • 5 hours of the required 10 hours of instrument time can be obtained from your PPL training

Once training is completed, your instructor will apply to Transport Canada on your behalf for the issuance of your night rating.  A sticker will be issued for you to include in your Aviation Document Booklet (ADB) to reflect the new privileges of your licence.

Privileges

  • allows the holder to fly after evening civil twilight during VFR
  • allows the holder to carry passengers if 5 night take-offs and 5 night landings, if the flight is conducted wholly or partly by night, have been completed within the past 6 months
