
Flight Instructor Rating (FIR) - Class 4
This rating will allow you to conduct flight training for the purpose of having a student obtaining a permit, licence or rating.
Pre-Requisites
- must have a valid Canadian Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) or Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)
- must be a Canadian citizen, a landed immigrant, or a person admitted into Canada to undertake flight training
- must be able to read, write, and speak in English without assistance
- must be a minimum of 18 years of age
Training Requirements
Ground School Training
An applicant must complete a minimum of 25 hours of Instructor Rating ground instruction which shall include:
- practical application of the basic principles of learning and techniques of instruction
- preparation and use of lesson plans
- procedures for planning and presenting preparatory ground instruction, preflight briefings, in-flight instruction, and post-flight debriefings
- theory of flight required to teach the air exercises
- aircraft flight manuals and aircraft operating limits
- presentation of pilot decision making concept
- a pass of the Class 4 FIR written exam (minimum 70%)
- a pass of the Class 4 FIR flight test to the standard outlined in the Flight Test Standards set by Transport Canada.
The applicant must also complete a minimum of 30 hours of dual flight instruction on overall pilot proficiency and the presentation of all exercises set forth in the Flight Instructor Guide and shall include a minimum of 5 hours of training in the teaching of instrument flight skills.
