
Instrument Rating (IR)
The instrument rating will vastly improve your skills as a pilot allowing you to fly into Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) in Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Either through your professional pilot aspirations or if you are looking to be less restricted with when you can travel, the instrument rating is an extremely valuable asset to the Canadian pilot.
We provide training for two groups of instrument rating, as follows:

Group 1

allows you to fly single or multi-engine aircraft in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) as endorsed on your licence

Group 3

allows you to fly single-engine aircraft in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) as endorsed on your licence

Pre-Requisites
- must hold a Private Pilot License or higher
- must be a Canadian citizen or a person admitted into Canada to undertake flight training
- must be able to read, write, and speak in English, without assistance
Training Requirements
- must have a Current Medical (minimum Category 3) for the flight test
- must have acquired a minimum of 50 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot-in-Command
- must have 40 hours total instrument time
- must have one dual cross-country flight under simulated or actual IMC conditions of a minimum of 100 nautical miles
- the flight to be conducted in accordance with an IFR flight plan to include, at 2 different locations, an instrument approach to minima
- a pass of the IR written exam (minimum 70%)
- a pass of the IR flight test to the standard outlined in the Flight Test Standards set by Transport Canada.
Privileges
- allows the holder to exercise the privileges under IFR and the privileges accorded with VFR OTT rating in either a single-engine or multi-engine aircraft
