
Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
The Private Pilot License (PPL) allows you to share with family and friends cross‐country trips and fly to places that might take you hours to drive. A PPL will allows you to fly anywhere, with passengers, in a Canadian-registered aircraft. Additional ratings can be added to this licence which include Night, Instrument, Multi-Engine and Single-Engine Sea-Plane Ratings.
Pre-requisites
- must have a Current Medical (minimum Category 3) for the flight test
- minimum 17 years of age (14 for first solo)
- must have a Student Pilot Permit (SPP) prior to solo flight
Training Requirements
There are 5 components to a private licence you will need to complete in order to get your licence.
- a minimum of 40 hours of pilot ground school completed
- a pass of the Transport Canada PPAER pilot written exam
- the completion of 45 flight hours (flight experience requirement)
- 17 hours of dual instruction (with an instructor)
- 12 hours of solo
- includes cross-country flight time and instrument training
- a pass of the PPL written exam (minimum 60%)
- a pass of the PPL flight test to the standard outlined in the Flight Test Standards set by Transport Canada
Privileges
- allows the holder to fly single engine aircraft that are classified as non-high performance
- allows the holder to fly during daylight hours under Visual Flight Rules (VFR)
- allows the holder to carry as many passengers are applicable to aircraft type
